Read-on for our colorful interview with Maylis, Marika and Andree of CrayolaMode.
CrayolaMode is an artistic group of three frends from Biarritz. Maylis, Marika and Andree have known each other for 10 years and bonded over their love and interest in fashion and the arts. Over breakfast during a vacation in France in 2016 they decided they just had to draw. With the sea in front of them and their supply of crayons, basic printer paper and magazines they had enough to get started and at that moment CrayolaMode was born. They created an Instagram account to seal the deal and after gaining hundreds of followers in just an hour they decided to keep it up and keep sharing.
LHD asked the girls a few questions and their responses delighted us as much as their illustrations.
WHAT IS YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE CRAYON COLOR? IS IT CRAYOLA BRAND?
Our first box of crayons was obviously Crayola but very simple colors. As we travel a lot, we tend to buy here and there new boxes and now a wide range of crayons for different brands. Of course we do have a special crush for Crayola brand! But we use only bold pastels.
It is very difficult to choose only one favorite crayon color… However, If you look closely at the illustrations we post on IG, you can see that Marika uses a lot of black, Maylis always loves a good red, and Andree loves green. But we try to get these styles to blend in together to give a unity to the whole account.
AFTER ILLUSTRATING LHD, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE?
We like so many of them! We easily imagine wearing the navy Harbour Island Dress after the beach, a Raleigh Skirt with seashell pink print with the Vizcaya blouse to go to the market in the morning and the LHD x Aurelie Bidermann Bird Garden Earrings to accessorize an outfit for a red wine on the Café du Commerce in Biarritz!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT MIAMI? FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT?
We love the architecture diversity with classical Art Deco buildings on Ocean Drive like the McAlpin, but also contemporary architecture with Herzog and DeMeuron's concrete parking on Lincoln Rd. And we recommend the excitement of Miami during Art Basel Fair. We love to see our favorites contemporary artists like John McAllister, Alex Katz and Betty Woodman. We also love contemporary institutions like the Bass Museum to see the funny Mika Rottenberg videos. Also, we love to drink a lemon cocktail in the rattan chairs of Freehand Hotel after a day finding vintage clothes and antiques decorations pieces at Stone Age Antiques.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE INEVITABLE BREAK OF A CRAYON?
It is actually one of the pleasures of using crayons...they break, they melt, but in the end is adds a lot of effects to the drawings. When a crayon has broken into pieces many times, we put it in a small box that we carry around while traveling, it is perfect to use on a plane! We have so much backup! But of course, don’t expect to keep a nice and clean manicure while drawing with these.
AT WHAT RESTAURANT TO YOU LOVE TO COLOR ON THE PAPER TABLECLOTHS?
We use A4 paper on a daily basis but while on a trip, we love to draw on things we find on our way like paper cups in cafés, newspapers on a bench or even barf bags on the plane and leave them behind us for the next person to find them.
In a restaurant, paper tablecloths are hard to resist! If we had to choose one special place, it would be in Biarritz where we gather once a year, since we now live in different places (Bordeaux and Hong Kong) and travel a lot for work. Le Carlos is a great spot in front of the ocean where they have those bright yellow paper tablecloths. Definitely our favorite spot to get coffee, chat and draw for hours!
